Soft drinks can lead to diabetes;

Drinking 2 or more soft drinks a day doubles the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a clinical study, written up in the European Journal of Endocrinology has found.

The aim of the study was to investigate sweetened beverage intake and risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults; autoimmune diabetes with features of type 2 diabetes.

The researchers found that those who drank 2 or more 200ml glasses of soft drinks a day were 2.4 times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes as those who did not drink these beverages. Now let’s face it, a standard can of soft drink in Aus is 375ml, so you are basically looking at 2.25 times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes from one can per day!

The risk of type 2 diabetes was increased by 20% for each daily serving increment beyond 2 per day. You may also find it a surprise, similar findings were seen when assessing sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages separately.

So what it all means is,

With 5x 200ml glasses of soft drink per day, you are 10 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes!!! And it doesn’t even matter if it is “Diet” or “Sugar-free” they all have effectively the same amount of risk for diabetes according to this study. Not to mention the other risk factors associated with artificial sweeteners shown in numerous other studies.

After all that, soft drinks don’t sound to me quite as sweet as they used to.  Not that I drink a lot of soft drink, but I am now going to be moving away from them almost completely except for special occasions, if you are also wanting to move away from them and work towards reducing your consumption it would be well worth checking out a product that is very helpful for managing those sugar cravings & also helps support normal healthy blood sugar levels, check it out HERE.
